Winter preparations

After last years record breaking winter now is a good time to ensure your house is going to be warm and dry until Spring 2011.

Here's a simple check list of things that can be taken care of now to prevent potential problems and expensive repair bills over the winter months.

  1. Have you checked your roof for any damage or possible leaks?

  2. Do your ridge tiles or verges need pointing on your roof?

  3. Is your guttering leaking?

  4. Has last years frost caused damage to your exterior brickwork?

  5. Are your windows and doors double glazed and fully sealed?

  6. Is your home well insulated?

  7. Is it time to upgrade that old single panel radiator for something more efficient and effective?

  8. Are you sure that the pipework and tanks in your property are well lagged?

  9. Is there a stop tap or isolator inside your property on the supply pipe to your outside tap to prevent it from freezing or even bursting?

  10. Is your bathroom functional and warm so you can enjoy a hot bath or a relaxing shower after a day of sledging or a slippery drive home from work?

Bathroom in a barn conversion

This job in a barn conversion near Astwood Bank was a bit more challenging than a standard bathroom with 4 square and level walls and a flat ceiling. It turned out nicely though with a newly positioned frameless shower enclosure nestling between two huge oak beams.

Modern bathroom with a 500 year old floor.

Another bathroom project from my time with AGS Gas Ltd, this time in Sambourne. Andrew, the carpenter on site, had done an incredible job reviving the Elm flooring which was hundreds of years old. The modern bathroom sat nicely in the room with a freestanding bath, a recessed shower diverter valve and a niche to keep those bottles of shampoo on bringing modern luxuries to a beautiful old building.

A well designed bathroom near Portway

This bathroom had sloping ceilings either side of the dormer window which restricted the amount of usable space. Larissa at City Plumbing came up with this clever basin unit design along with the customers and the rest was down to me. I looked great and gave a luxury hotel feel to the room with lots of practical storage and worktop space. A new shower over the bath and a hinged screen meant the customer had choices at bathing time. The paneling on the walls and a modern compact close coupled toilet completed the room.
